Cabin(s) in the Woods

Indianapolis, Indiana 2013

Program: 3000 s.f. residence

Site Area: 2.5 Acres

Status: Construction complete

Client: Wes Janz and Marcia Stone

Driven by a need to be substantially freed from the constraints and expectations of tight neighborhood living, the site for “Cabin(s) in the Woods” was chosen as an ideal place for controlled co-existence with neighbors coupled with natural beauty.  Bounded by a busy commuter street to the east and an inter-city walking trail (Monon Trail) to the west, the house is situated in multiple parts on an east-west orientation with views through a tree-lined ravine towards the west.  “Cabin(s) in the Woods” conceptually describes the house both as experience and formal composition. The house is expressed in three larger units combined to evoke separate but unified living in a natural setting.  The three-part composition consists of an existing limestone clad house containing living spaces, a wood timber-frame structured addition for cooking, sleeping, and main entry, and a two-car garage built primarily with wood shipping pallets.  All three parts to the house have their own special inter-connection of glass and cedar wood columns, but exist as a unified system of experiences in the house one might have walking in the woods.  The clients, an architect and designer, provided strong vision for the project, making the house truly a product of design collaboration.  Cabin(s) in the Woods was featured by Indianapolis chapter of the AIA as one of 6 houses featured in the 2012 home tour.  The house has also been featured in the IndyStar and NUVO magazine.
